This is a story about hypnosis…

    Many mes

Dredging up the past is meant to be unhealthy, but how are we supposed to move forward without letting go of things that are holding us back? How are we supposed to be secure and happy, until we find a stable base to build upon?

I’ve been going back through the memory banks, trying to figure out how I arrived here, today. I’ve been wondering whether I should repair and renovate, or whether to build anew, to start again afresh, from scratch.

As I’ve recounted my story, I realise there’s a repeating theme: having to leave stuff behind and rebuild everything. Every time I do that, I feel like it’s a test of true friendships – to see if they’ll survive long-distance. It’s insecurity that drives a lot of this, so please don’t feel I’m actually testing people.

Thinking about it, I’ve actually become hypersensitive to feelings of rejection. I will now push people away, as soon as their commitment to friendship seems questionable. I’ve learned to not let people into my heart anymore, and to try and be a person who can withstand the shock of losing all my friends, at any moment. “I’ll just make new friends” I tell myself, as I find myself feeling all alone, yet again.

The first times I lost all my friends, circumstances were out of my control. I was moved from school to school, and around the country. These were early, formative lessons in the value of human relationships. The message was clear: I don’t deserve stable relationships.

Later, I lost groups of friends due to relationship breakups. This was part of the learning process of growing up. You need to have your own friends, or else you’re too heavily dependent on your partner for your social life, and you have a double-whammy when you break up.

Finally, I tried to move out of London to live on the coast, and hoped that I would be able to have friends come visit from the city, to keep me going. In actual fact, the change wasn’t so bad that time, as I made local friends through kitesurfing, plus my friends from London did come to visit quite often.

Unfortunately, my life completely collapsed, what with an abusive all-consuming relationship, that poisoned a lot of relationships and a malicious ex who campaigned against me and caused many of my friends to take sides, in a way that I’ve never experienced before. The place I used to live in was small, and rumours and gossip became unbearable. I needed a clean break from that microcosm.

In that instance, every area of my life was intimately connected to every other area. People from completely different areas of my life would say to me “I heard…” and repeat some vicious propaganda from my ex, that was completely one-sided. Because I was very sick, I couldn’t stand it, I couldn’t defend myself against the onslaught of a person intent on defacing my character, I couldn’t match my ex’s energy and I couldn’t bring myself to stoop to the level of retaliation. Believe me, I could have dished the dirt on her, just like she did on me.

But, this is about moving on. I’m determined that I’m not going to let bitterness and regret overwhelm me, even though I feel terribly hurt, isolated, alone and treated unfairly. There’s two sides to every story, but my side doesn’t have to be told if it’s just tit-for-tat. I’m bigger than that.

    Pendulum

You know, you should go ahead and judge me. If you don’t know and like my character by now, then I’m not going to try and convince you. I’m not going to twist your arm. I don’t know why more people don’t unfriend me on Facebook, block my number on WhatsApp and generally send the message that I’m dumped, as a friend… I’ve been judged unworthy, unpleasant, and having bad character.

A recent ex-girlfriend started throwing plates and knives at me in a stroppy rage, having a tantrum. I thought “here we go again” as I shielded myself from blows, with her screams echoing throughout the building. She stormed out of the flat. I didn’t let her back in, it was over. I’m not going to be an abuse victim again.

I lost a whole bunch of friends, when I broke up with that girlfriend. Some of them even said that they didn’t agree with the way I mistreated her. Errr, you mean, like, I should have allowed myself to remain a victim of domestic abuse? I was very hurt by the way that people took sides, and what was clearly a corruption of the truth of the reasons why we had broken up. Clearly, my ex had painted a different picture from the one where she was being violently abusive towards me. But, I guess I’ve gotten used to such bullshit. I cried and cried, but at least it was over relatively quickly.

Maybe there’s something just unloveable about me? My parents could look at me and say “it’s cool, he doesn’t need his schoolfriends or any stability in his childhood“. A couple of ex-girlfriends could look at me and say “that face really needs a couple of black eyes and a broken nose“. A load of friends could say “well, we’ve heard one side of the story. I’m sure that’s enough, and now our opinion of this guy’s character is completely changed and we no longer want anything to do with him“.

I was brought up to be a pacifist. I was brought up to turn the other cheek. I was brought up to believe that two wrongs don’t make a right. Every time I ever lashed out in retaliation, it was always me who suffered the consequences, so I became passive. I’ve been everybody’s punchbag and convenient dumping ground.

I’ve cast my mind back as far as I can go, searching for a memory of security, a sense that somebody is loyal, that they’d treat me the same as I’d treat them… clearly, I’m carrying a lot of hurt, a deep sense of loss and abandonment.

    Round window

It’s a new challenge for me, to improve not move. It’s a new challenge, to repair, not throw away and start again. It’s a new challenge, to stand my ground and refuse to let my character be defaced by horrible people.

I’ve got to learn how to defend myself in a more positive way. Just being a passive punching bag, and letting people say what they want about me, and paint me in any light they like, is not good.

My new approach has been to be brutally honest, about every tiny flaw, every little mistake I’ve ever made. I’ve tried to fess up to every regrettable action.

People told me I’m a bad person for so long, that I decided to live up to my character. However, I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t lie, cheat, steal or do anything to hurt anybody. I ended up hurting myself. You would barely believe how much I’ve beaten myself up, harmed myself and taken myself to the brink of death.

I’ve paid the price, plus surplus too. I don’t give a fuck now, if people want to hold me to account for something I was never to blame for in the first place. If you corner a dog and beat it, and you want to put it down because it bit you, when it was cornered, frightened, beaten and suffering, with nowhere to go except through you… go right ahead.

I’ve examined my entire history, and I see a caged animal. I see a person who’s been trusting, who’s taken a chance on people, been brave enough to risk getting hurt. People have taken advantage of my trusting, innocent nature, my kindness and want to feel accepted, included. I’ve forgiven those who have hurt me, not that it makes the blindest bit of difference to me.

At least I can sleep at night. Those who bully, abuse, slander and take advantage of those who show the slightest weakness, must surely have a conscience. Those monsters must surely feel filled with regret at their abhorrent behaviour. At least I can put my hand on my heart and say that I never set out to hurt anybody or exploit the weak and the needy.

There’s so much stuff that I’m dredging up, and I wish it could stop, but stress, pressure and the fragility of my situation, plus the dysfunction and neglect of all my relationships, mean that I’m pretty much trapped alone with my thoughts. I’m trying to write, to expel the toxin of all this hurt, but writing’s all I’ve got. I sit at work, bored, unchallenged, while the thoughts and the feelings pile up like a traffic jam. When I get home, the words just flood out like a raging torrent, and I can’t stop. I always write more than I mean to.

I have a friend who’s stuck by me, even though he saw the very worst of my character, and was deeply involved through the death throes of my normal life and my long-term relationship. He caught some of the flak, as I thrashed around like an injured beast, blindly lashing out, due to fear and pain. Surprisingly, he is one of my biggest supporters, despite the fact that I brought a great deal of stress into his life, and dragged him though months of hell, as co-founders of a startup.

I have few examples I can hold up, to support my belief that my character is sound, and that I should remain living. Even my own parents have always made it clear that I’m a “bad kid” and that I’m worthless, a disappointment.

I’ve been digging and digging, to see if there’s some evidence in my childhood history of an evil streak. Perhaps I committed a genocide when I was an infant? Perhaps I perpetrated torture on a global scale? Perhaps I murdered my real family, as a psychopathic toddler, before being adopted by an experimental cult where I was reprogrammed to believe I was worthless and to act passively when I’m abused?

Anyway, I’m going to leave it there. When I get into this trance-like state, I can just write and write and write (I know, right?) and before I know it I’ve written far more than anybody would have the time, patience and indulgence to read.

I’m going to start limiting myself again, to how much I write. It would be good if I can break out of this regression, this state of backwards-looking. It would be good if I can look forwards, and think positively, but there’s no external trigger to do so. The world is stunned into silence, or the void is simply too cavernous to even care about the white noise, the hot air that spews forth.

Looking for some nugget of security in my past has yielded nothing. Looking back to see if I can remember some happy, stable, secure time has brought chequered results. Perhaps I might have found some compassion for myself, even if I haven’t managed to elicit it in anybody else. Either that, or I just have enough accumulated evidence of mistreatment to assume that the world is nearly entirely hostile to me, and it’s time to say goodbye.

If I look at the trend, I appear to be spiralling downwards.

This is a story about channelling energy into something positive…

    The Globe

Buckminster Fuller was going to commit suicide, so that his family could benefit from his life insurance policy. After an epiphany, he found his purpose in life and went on to publish over 30 books.

In a month or two, I will have written the equivalent of 5 novels. Obviously, most of it is garbage, but I hope it serves as a warm-up. The point is to see if I have the discipline to sit down and write every day. Writing gives my life structure, routine.

I normally have 3 or 4 things I want to write about each day, and I struggle to keep under 1,000 words. Browsing statistics tell me that people read for between 3 and 4 minutes per day, on average… even when I’ve broken my rules and have written 6,000 words, which means that they’re probably skim reading or getting bored and stopping reading before the end.

There has been real violence & venom in my words, as I’ve struggled with a sense of abandonment and real anger and frustration at being let down on promises at a really critical time, and when my life really hung in the balance.

My writing did nothing to sway the people who I targeted, to act with any decency, but now that I know they’re no longer reading, I do feel satisfied that I have at least put my side of the story across.

In actual fact, I feel like I made myself look like quite a bitter and angry person, quite immature and unconstructive, negative. It might be well overdue, and the damage is already done to my image, my reputation, but now it’s time to stop grinding the axe and start writing in a more positive way.

Behind every rant, every acerbic scalding word, was a lot of emotion, but it was all focussed & fixated on a few individuals. Not very healthy or productive. Unlikely to lead to pieces of writing that are interesting for people to read.

I’ve read a couple of posthumously published satires where the author’s frustrations with the world are barely concealed. They are repetitive and almost cringeworthy to read, but the passion makes the books hard to put down. However, they are good works of literature, unlike me just slagging off my drug addict, alcoholic, loser parents and abusive ex-wife.

It’s difficult to know how to act. My school days were dominated by bullying. My working years have been dominated by age discrimination and people who’ve been promoted to a position of incompetence, where they are completely useless and concentrate exclusively on stopping anybody else from getting ahead. My longest relationship was with an abusive bully. I’ve had relatively few good role models.

I’ve picked a few people who I like and respect, from around the world, and I’ve tried to learn what I can from them, and to emulate their life philosophies, some of their thoughts and teachings, to be interested in things they’re interested in, to try and understand what is important in their lives, and how that makes them tick.

I’m a long way from where I’d like to be. I’ve made a poor account of myself, blathering on like a fool while in a messed up state. I’ve exposed my darker side: the rage and frustration has bubbled over and I’ve revealed human characteristics that are less than desirable.

It’s good to connect with people but I’ve been very exposed. I fear that I’ve lost the respect of some people I really idolise, and others that I could learn a lot from. I fear that I have taken something that had a lot of potential to reach a broad spectrum of people I wanted to connect with, and I have corrupted it into a nasty weapon to try and beat up on just a few people, and that’s kinda shameful.

    Slings n arrows

You know what though? I don’t have a healthy outlet, other than writing this, and nor did I learn any ways to deal with frustration and anger as a child and young adult. I was the one on the receiving end of other people’s shit. I took the blame for my parents’ shortcomings. I was the recipient of my ex-wife’s viciousness. I was the victim of daily bullying and abuse.

I’ve soaked up all this shitty abuse for years and years and years and now it’s all got to come out somehow. I’m fed up of being the punchbag. I’m fed up of being the scapegoat. I’m fed up of taking the blame for everything. I’m fed up of being the quiet keeper of secrets.

Yes, I’ve got to find a more positive way to channel this negative energy. Hitting back at the people who hurt me, in particular my parents and ex-wife, will never lead anywhere. The bullies and abusers never feel any remorse. They’ll never back down. They’ll never say sorry.

Retaliation & tit-for-tat… I know that it’s a dark path to go down. I know that the secret is to rise above it all. It’s hard to be the bigger person. It’s hard to just let things go when you’ve been wronged, even if the hatred is destroying you from the inside.

Some of my friends’ parents taught me to believe that two wrongs don’t make a right. They’re probably right, but the main problem is that retaliation is punished more harshly than bullying and abuse. We reward the bullies and the abusers and the bigger stronger people, and hand out trite platitudes to their victims.

But, it’s true, I am the bigger person. I know the chain of violence and abuse has to be broken. An eye for an eye leaves everyone blind.

I always thought that society would cleave itself in two, with the sensitive and intelligent beings creating a super-race that would have all the best technology, while the thick-skulled idiots would just slowly devolve into some more basic animal creature, which is quite well physically endowed but only uses its muscles to fight over food scraps and compete for other similarly dumb animal mates. These creatures would obviously very easy to herd and to keep separate from the elite.

When life was going well, I lost all the bitterness about my shitty childhood. At last, I was tasting the rewards for that abuse… I had risen above the herd of idiots. Sadly, as a horribly ironic twist, I ended up dating and then later marrying a bully, and she dragged me down to her level. It’s taken me a long time to realise that I need to distance myself from such people as soon as I can, and to get myself back into safe space, away from the herd of idiots.

It’s really hard to not be bitter & twisted, when you know you’ve got to rebuild so much. It’s really hard not to be angry and resentful at people who have profited from your labour, your industriousness, your ingenuity, your trust, your kindness.

I’m remarkably close to either a breakthrough or capitulation, suicide. Things are on a knife-edge. I have the opportunity to earn 3 or even 4 times what I could have done, weighed down by the abusive numbskulls. With money comes opportunity. With opportunity comes the benefit of all those tough experiences.

Now, I’m so passionately against bullying and abuse. I’m so passionately against living miserably. I’m so passionately against brutality and cruelty.

It would be easy for me to become cruel and bullying, as a result of having suffered so much shit myself, however my future hasn’t been written off by a few horrible and small-minded people. There’s a glimmer of an opportunity, and every chance I might rise above the herd of idiots once again.

I’ve got 6 months ahead of me before any kind of sense of security will return to my life. 6 months living under threat. 6 months where one thing going wrong could screw everything up. That’s a lot of pressure to live with every day. Everything has to go right, during the next 6 months, or else it takes me beyond the limit of what I can handle. There is no contingency. There is no safety margin. There is no excess fat.

As you can imagine, that makes me very tense, very highly strung, very anxious. That pressure comes out in a negative way sometimes, directed at those who dumped me in the shit, but I know that’s no use. That pressure comes out as hopelessness sometimes: a sense that I can never overcome the obstacles, and luck will never be in my favour for long enough to break free again. The hopelessness leads to suicidal thoughts.

So, tomorrow I start something that has real tangible value, to rebuild my life. However, don’t be surprised if the pressure is unbearable, and I fly off the handle at seemingly minor setbacks. Don’t be surprised if I’m still not quite able to bury the hatchet and stop being so aggressive, so violent in my communication towards my persecutors.

I’m a long way from breaking free again.

  • Bitterness and Regret

This is a story about things that can’t be changed…

    Where it all restarted

London represents opportunity to me. People talk about the streets being paved with gold, and this city has always provided for me, when I’ve been going through hard times or thought I had reached a dead end.

Obviously, it’s people not the place, that has meant that I’ve had a roof over my head, and the chance to work again, when I would otherwise have sunk, stagnated, rotted and died.

I’ve been very bitter about my ex-wife and parents, who haven’t helped, and have even been obstructive. The bitterness is partly because I’ve not yet been able to have a sustained period of recovery, to show to those who have helped me that it was worthwhile.

I’ve considered going back and deleting or editing some of my bitter, angry rants at people who’ve let me down, obstructed my recovery, even injured me and taken me away from friends, work, my life. It’s obvious to me how stuck in a rut I am, how boring and repetitive I’ve become, how obsessive and negative I sound.

There are several challenges I’ve set for myself at the moment:

    • Get back to work
    • Fight depression
    • Tidy up a load of administrative loose ends
    • Stay ‘clean‘

It probably seems like I’m making mountains out of molehills, having a storm in a teacup, but there are few words to truly convey just how dysfunctional my life was. Post was shoved out of sight, bills piled up, finances got in a terrible mess, out of contact with all my friends, conflict with my family. The threat of bankruptcy and homelessness was imminent, around the clock.

I know that you have probably had times when you’ve worried about making ends meet, how you’re going to pay the bills, how you’re going to pay the rent or the mortgage. I’m sure you’ve felt like you’re not going to do it, that you’re going to fall on hard times and be evicted from your home. Try living like that for a few years, and see what your stress levels are like.

A lot of my bitteness stems from the fact that the depths I sank to, the problems I’ve had to overcome… a lot of it was so easily avoidable. A very small handful of people just had to honour their commitments, their word, their duty and their obligation as supposedly decent human beings, and my situation could have been very different.

However, I need to move forward. I don’t feel in a particularly forgiving mood, so instead I’m going to blame myself. I’m going to blame myself for trusting people. I’m going to blame myself for taking people at their word. I’m going to blame myself for thinking that other people were dependable, reliable, trustworthy, pleasant, decent human beings.

I can improve on that. I can actually say that I learned some important life lessons. “In sickness and in health” are just empty words to some people, and some parents are just terrible, terrible people. My faith in humanity is damaged, but I will probably benefit from becoming cynical, untrusting, negative, selfish and unreliable… just like them.

    London Tyre

I need to make it clear here that I’m not talking about all those many people in London, who have been my friends, my support network, my saviours in my hour of need. London has provided me with clothes in hospital, where my parents have left me for dead. London has provided me with a dry roof over my head, where my ex-wife would see me go homeless. London has provided non-judgemental friends, where others have recoiled in prejudiced horror at the propaganda pedalled by my ex and my Dad.

One of my great sadnesses is that where these worlds have collided, and the chaos and trauma that I have been through has overspilled into all areas of my life, long-standing friendships have been damaged. I can not and will not criticise my friend, who made me a guest in his home, for the fact that he believed things said behind my back, which his naïvety led him to believe, but it’s hard to know how to fix things up between us.

There’s a saying amongst people dealing with mental health issues:

    Nothing about us without us

It’s quite simple really. You have no idea what a person is going through, when they’re suffering the chaos and trauma associated with mental health issues (including substance abuse) and 2nd or 3rd hand information is just tittle-tattle, and will not help anybody.

It sounds like I’m ticking my friends off, and I’m really not. Where people have tried to help, I have nothing but gratitude. I don’t expect people to understand, to make allowances, to go out of their way to educate themselves. I have no entitlement, beyond the basic human decency of not making assumptions based on stuff that’s been discussed behind my back, but I can understand that there might be honest good intentions.

This is all starting to sound rather paranoid, confused. Yes, that’s the psychological damage that’s done when you overhear hushed whispers about yourself, and news spreads via gossip and contact behind your back that you aren’t party to.

As a sick person, I felt like a failure. I blamed myself for being defective, and later for ‘choices‘ I made. I viciously attacked myself, criticised my inability to cure my ailments and restore my former stability, reliability, order in my life. When you feel terrible about yourself, you carry a huge burden of shame. You try and hide yourself away, minimise your footprint on the world, withdraw from human contact and the public gaze.

It’s very strange, pretending you don’t exist, because you’re ashamed, embarrassed. You live in fear of anybody discovering that you’re not well. You live in fear of anybody finding out how much of a failure you think you are. Of course, this breeds paranoia. Of course, you are hypersensitive to people talking about you behind your back.

Of my friends, there’s no blame here. They tried to help. They wanted to help. Their motives were good. They aided. They helped, they didn’t hinder. I have only regret that I haven’t yet been able to use the patchwork quilt of support that I’ve received to put it all together into something more positive… yet.

    Primrose Hill

Certain beginnings haven’t reached the end yet. This story’s not over

This is a story about a fresh start…

    Primrose Hill

Why do we believe we can motivate change by shaming people, blaming them, making them feel guilty, placing even more obstacles in their path, isolating them, damaging their self-esteem and denying them the basic respect that every human should expect to receive?

My assumption, from childhood, school and my longest relationship, is that I’m going to be physically and verbally abused, to get me to comply with somebody else’s idea of how I should think and act.

If you tell somebody they’re “bad” enough times, sometimes, that person might say “screw it” and start acting up to the bad name you’ve given them. If you always expect the worst from somebody, one day, they might start fulfilling your long-held prophecy.

I saw a satirical cartoon the other day, where a policeman arrests a person doing drugs, because “drugs destroy lives“. That person is then tried in court and sent to prison, and of course, they then can’t get a job, seeing that they’re a convicted criminal. When the policemen then sees that person, now living destitute on the street, the policeman says “I told you so!“.

I’ve been trying to escape the gravity of an abusive relationship for quite a long time now. It’s harder than you think. When your partner that you love has no respect for you, and your self esteem is destroyed, you can’t expect a person to get back on their feet quickly. You don’t know how deep the damage runs.

I’ve still got the shouting and screaming and battering of doors ringing in my ears. Imagine being shut into a tiny room, with somebody raging and snarling and unleashing a torrent of vicious aggression on the other side of the door. Imagine being trapped in that corner, not knowing when it’s going to end, not having any way out.

I’m not looking for pity. I’m trying to explain how a confident, outgoing, gregarious character, with a bright, sunny positive disposition, might end up becoming pale and withdrawn. How that person might end up falling foul of escapist traps, and being brainwashed into believing that they’re a “bad“, “evil” and “worthless” person.

I’ve been asked to carry the can, to shoulder a shit-tonne of blame. I’ve been asked to beat myself up and hold myself accountable for every ‘choice‘ I’ve made, and every consequence. I’m expected to think of myself as some isolated individual, who acted entirely with free will… I’m not subject to influence of other people, circumstances, my environment. Apparently I’m the first person in the history of the Universe to be in total control of my own destiny.

    Circle of Life

I don’t think it’s at all useful, this idea of holding everybody accountable for unforeseeable consequences, or the unavoidable results of being beaten into a corner. Does it really make you feel better, to have subdued a person, where they just resentfully start to parrot your bullshit? Does it really feel like a victory to have abused a person to the point that they submit to your muscle-flexing and intimidation?

Feeling sorry for myself is not going to lead anywhere positive. Yes, if you do wrong by a person, you do give them an excuse to act up, to react. I’m sorry, but if you’re going to treat a person like shit, you have given them the mandate to act the way you wanted them to. That’s not to say that you’ve revealed or changed that person’s character though. There’s no such thing as ‘bad‘ or ‘evil‘ people… we’re all shaped by the world around us.

It’s taken a hell of a long time to move judgemental, unkind people with no compassion or understanding, away from me. Breaking the bonds with people who were supposed to care – but don’t – is a hard thing to do. It’s not my job to re-educate those who would rather see a life destroyed than admit they’re wrong. It’s not my job to soak up the abuse of somebody who’s got an axe to grind, and I’m their punchbag.

I don’t want to become another bitter, twisted, negative, cynical and bullying individual, out to trample other people in order to get ahead myself. If I can’t beat them, I’m not going to join them… I’m going to put as much space between me and them as possible.

When we think about Game Theory, and specifically a game called Prisoner’s Dialemma, what strategy would you employ? In this game, the person who rats out their co-conspirator stands to gain the most, by stabbing their partner-in-crime in the back. The person who acts in a positive, giving, trusting way stands to potentially lose everything, even though their motive is to reach the fairest possible outcome.

I refuse to switch my strategy to that used by my persecutors. I refuse to become a backstabber, because then the whole world just turns into a horrible place of mistrust and unpleasantness. I don’t want to live in a world where everybody is out to screw over everybody else.

I have literally turned the other cheek. I had the trust that, having received a black eye one side, I would return my face to centre and allow it to be struck the other side, if my abusive partner wished to dish out further unprovoked blows to my head. They gleefully gave me a black eye on the other side, before planting one square in the middle of my face, breaking my nose.

Even with self defence as a reasonable just cause to raise my own fists, I’m quite glad to say that I simply took that beating and stood by my strongly held beliefs that we can’t simply descend to the level of animals, and be ruled by our temper, anger, aggression, violence.

When I eventually cracked, it was with glee that I had given this vicious person exactly what they wanted, and they tried to label me as the ‘bad guy‘. For some crazy reason, I felt guilty about no longer wanting to be the passive punchbag. For some crazy reason I felt guilty about defending myself. For some crazy reason I felt guilty about retreating into a corner, in self-defence.

This abusive partner had the gall to talk about me infringing their human rights, when they had me as a prisoner in my own home. Violence, aggression, verbal abuse… and I was the bad guy for using a door as a shield to protect myself from the blows of their fists, and kicks. That doesn’t make any sense.

That was how this horrible, horrible relationship ended, with me having been sealed into my own tomb, a sarcophagus. I had no access to a toilet, food or drinking water, but still it was me who was in the wrong, despite the fact I was completely trapped, dying, in a corner.

When the separation was mercifully forced upon this unrelentingly vicious person, a friend took pity on me and took me into his home, to release me from the place that had become my prison cell.

It should come as no surprise that there was lasting psychological damage from the sustained attacks that I received. However, the expectation – especially from my family – was that I should bounce back immediately and be absolutely fine. They were even surprised to find that given the same treatment: shouting abuse at me, while cornering me, would give the same negative response of me retreating into a position of trapped self-defence, paralysed by fear.

    Hostel Dorm

It was me who made the brave steps to start moving forwards. I was living with a generalised threat of abuse, invasion of privacy, being attacked anywhere, anytime. I had gone through the long period of abuse, and been psychologically scarred, but it was me who made the first moves to try and repair the damage.

I tried to allow myself to be even more open to attack. I tried to fight fear with trust. I thought that by allowing myself to be in a vulnerable situation, things would somehow improve. It’s very hard to let yourself be vulnerable when you’ve been so deeply affected by something that’s damaged you so deeply.

My attempt to open myself up to abuse by my persecutors backfired spectacularly. Psychologically, I couldn’t cope with that level of threat, and it made me act in a very strange way. The net result was that I kept myself hiding in my corner, with absolutely no defence. I spent 3 days paralysed by fear, before eventually being physically attacked by a member of my family who’s supposed to love and care for me. I was hospitalised with a major injury. Hardly a success.

Later, I ended up in large hostel dormitories, which meant the total loss of all personal space, privacy… living in a totally exposed way, under continuous scrutiny. Again, you can’t imagine how hard it is to be suffering major psychological trauma, while being watched like a goldfish in its bowl by nosey strangers. Many people found it far more entertaining to stare at me, rather than get on with their own lives, mind their own business.

People found me fascinating to sit and stare at. Instead of leaving me alone, moving away from me and the shit that I’ve been dealing with, they’ve been drawn to me like moths to a flame. They’ve pulled up a chair, got out the popcorn and sat back to enjoy the show.

“Oh my god, this is awful” they must have exclaimed. “I know, we can’t miss a single second of this engrossing stuff. It’s so entertaining” is what they really mean. Nobody recoiled in horror, or could tear their eyes away. They were fascinated, intrigued. Are we so used to seeing pain and human suffering on TV that we genuinely consider it entertainment, a spectacle for us to simply sit back and observe, for our own sick pleasure?

One of my friends, who actually understands a bit of what I’ve been through, actually managed to convince people that I’m not part of the paid entertainment. I’m not a one man travelling show, for your viewing pleasure. Much to my audience’s disappointment, he actually convinced them to go and gawp at something else. That helped. A lot.

Very recently, another friend masterfully diverted attentions from creating an unwelcome storm, an intrusion that would have been unhelpful. He recognised the hallmarks of somebody trapped by psychological trauma, and actually held back those forces that I feared so much, so that some repair work was finally done.

Fools rush in, and first, do no harm. These are good mottos. If you don’t understand what somebody is going through, it’s not a spectator sport, and you don’t know what damage your interference is going to do. Hands off, back away from the person who’s trapped in the corner… don’t drive them deeper into their attempts to fend off the world.

    Psych Hospital

There’s a hell of a long journey to feeling safe and secure in my own home again. It might not seem like it, because the story is a long and complex one, but there’s a lot of damage to be repaired and it takes a lot of time.

It’s the rushing that makes everything take so much longer. When you expect a person to be magically back to normal overnight, and you do nothing to understand what they’ve been through, or try to imagine what they’re dealing with… that’s what keeps a person trapped in a never-ending cycle.

You might think that episodes of illness prove that I’ll never be fully better again, but it’s actually you who is creating a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you mistreat a person, assume the worst, and act on your own negative views, of course you’re going to trap a person into a position they can’t escape.

It’s hard enough to just deal with the backlog of problems. To have extra obstacles placed in front of you, to have support withdrawn and be left to fend for yourself… those are the reasons why lives get written off, why people sink without a trace.

It’s a long game, helping somebody recover, get their strength back, get back on their feet. There are no short cuts, and there are no easy conclusions you can jump to. Even when you start to think you understand what makes a person tick, and you can extrapolate, guess, and work out what their possible future is, you’re wrong. As soon as you start writing a person off, you’re part of the problem. You’re hurting and hindering that person.

I know it sucks to care about a person who’s really hurting, and is really damaged. I know it’s easier to protect yourself by joining in the attack on that person, rather than taking the harder road of actually undoing the years and years of attacks that an easy target sustains.

Once you’ve started to be abused and bullied, you get weaker, so you’re easier to abuse and bully, and so the cycle continues and gets worse. Everybody wants to be on the winning team, to some extent, and there’s an animal instinct to pick on the weak.

I think we should be better than that. We’re humans, not wild animals. We need to be better than that.

    Salt Water Clensing

Damaged people need a clean, fresh start, but you don’t know how much baggage they’ve got. You don’t know how much of a burden still rests on that person’s shoulders. It takes a lot more effort than you could possibly imagine to give that person a chance of a fresh start, a clean break.

  • Derelict Life Fragments

This is a story about abandoning ship…

    Approaching Pier

I went down to Bournemouth to decide what was worth saving from my old life, which I had hurriedly left behind in an attempt to move on and start again back in London.

These are some of the photos I took. I’m not going to write much.

    Open the Door

The stuff was mostly in cupboards, under the stairs or in megashed. I didn’t have time to go up in the attic. I must have literally spent less than an hour quickly snapping before I had to get out, and not get dragged back into the past (ha ha! Not really winning, I know).

And here’s everything I salvaged put into storage:

    Self Storage

That’s it, a life dismantled. The contents of a 3-bedroom house, attic and megashed, refined down and locked away in a rented cupboard.

This is a blog post with pictures of my house taken in the daytime, for your interest: https://manicgrant.com/2015/stress-test

It’s only stuff, but words fail me for some reason. Perhaps because I have never since quite managed to get all the same pieces at the same time ever again: the friends & family, the girl, the hobby, the job, the house, the car and the stuff.

  • Girlfriends I Have Known and Loved

This is a story about late starters…

    Dark Room

The way that girls enter and leave my life is fairly strange. Often I find myself dating somebody who was firmly in the friend zone. It never seems to pan out with the girls I’ve picked myself, so far.

I seem to be inescapably hopeless at reading hints that are dropped, or other indications that the opposite sex has taken an interest in me. When I replay past events, conversations, sometimes it seems obvious that there was flirtation, and I slap my palm to my forehead, but other times I seem to completely get the wrong end of the stick.

While some people might mourn the loss of the games, the ambiguity, the ‘chase‘, playing ‘hard to get‘ and generally feeling insecure and uncertain, I’m very glad that we’re entering a more modern phase in the development of society, where we tell each other what we think and girls are allowed to be as forward as boys are. Hopefully, everybody gets what they want a lot quicker and easier than the old fashioned way.

It would seem to me though, like matching people’s self-esteem levels is as important as matching people who are attractive to each other. Getting together with a girl who you feel is ‘out of your league‘ when she confidently let you know she was attracted to you is one thing, but can you handle those little deliberate or accidental blows to your sense of security? When one partner clearly feels they have the upper hand, is the relationship doomed?

In your mid thirties you can’t deny that the stakes of the game change substantially for the sexes. For women who haven’t yet had babies but would like to be a mother at some point, the biological clock doesn’t have that many more years to tick. The race to find the few remaining single men who haven’t become fathers, adulterers or terminal imbeciles, is a challenge that I don’t envy the opposite sex.

    Body Parts

So, the photo-message of bodily parts is the new pre-date paradigm, apparently. After the exchange of phone numbers, WhatsApp’ing can commence, and for many men, the urge to send the object of their affections a picture of their ‘junk‘ is too hard to resist, apparently. Perhaps shorthand for all that conversational ‘getting to know you‘ waffle, the sending of penis photos is quite normal now, I’m told.

I don’t think I’ve even photographed mine, let alone entrusted the digitised image to the internet for delivery.

I know that my ex used a no-strings sex website for a hookup, and photos of genitals were positively and eagerly sent and received there, but I can’t see how it could have made a transition to traditional dating, although I guess it’s the next logical step now that we are doing away with the hint dropping and more subtle flirtation.

I feel quite glad to have had a few relationships end amicably, or fizzle out naturally, to reassure me that things don’t have to end as badly as they did with my ex-wife. It’s true that with one fiery Italian, things were a bit too similar for comfort, with plates and other kitchen implements being hurled at my head. When she stormed out of my flat, I was all too pleased to lock the door behind her. She was surprised and disappointed I didn’t chase after her.

    Jumping Jackpot

Finding a girl who’ll sunbathe on a windswept beach for an entire week, taking photos and videos of you kitesurfing, is jackpot kind of stuff, but holidays are only brief respites from daily drudgery. If you’re not getting along in your regular everyday life, at some point the relationship is going to fall apart.

The modernisation of relationships is great in terms of transparency and getting what you want, but personally, I can find myself going along with things and ending up somewhat embroiled in situations that I never intended, simply because I still lack self confidence and don’t assert myself sometimes.

Being polite, courteous and generous when buying drinks or food can often be mistaken for shy guy flirtation, and I know I’ve sent some girls confusing signals, when I’ve done little more than conduct myself with good manners, or so it seems to me.

I read something the other day that suggested men have sex whenever they can, and women have sex whenever they want. I guess I must be quite the freak if the article rings true with most other people, as I myself have found myself faking illness and even faking climax, although that one is slightly harder to pull off without a condom.

If you’ve read much of my blog, you’ll know I’m exceptionally weird anyway.

Not having sex or at least trying to kiss the girl on the first date is seen as saying you’re not interested and there’s no ‘spark‘ so far as I can tell. Taking things slowly with girls I’ve really liked has always been misread as me not being interested, and so it is that things tend to move pretty fast in the London dating scene.

    Clubbing

Pulling in a nightclub is still a black art to me, but perhaps I shouldn’t flirt so much with my gay friends. Probably sends out the wrong kind of signals.

What’s the proper protocol to observe when trying to pull a girl in a club? I know there’s something about meaningful glances being exchanged, and then you dance closer and closer, until you’re definitely unnaturally in each others body space. Then I guess there’s a point at which you just grab each other and start getting off. Either that or you get knee’ed in the bollocks and some kind of sexual harassment change is brought against you, presumably. I haven’t really had the guts or the stupidity to try it.

Men are pretty lazy and content to go with the flow. I wonder how many relationships have continued to the marriage and children phase, simply because a guy couldn’t face the tears and practical task of actually separating. According to the James Bond movies I’ve seen, women seem to make their selection of partner based on someone wh0 pushes themselves upon them most forcibly, before then becoming limp and compliant.

Personally, I seem to not have benefitted at all by trying to be the gentleman, doing things in a slightly old-fashioned way, even if I do benefit from the fact that at least I know where I stand with most girls now, and opportunities for promiscuity are there even if I’m still pretty much a serial monogamist.

    Every Port

I guess London has always had its seedier side

  • Locks on Doors

This is a story about a desire for privacy…

    Door Latch

I’ve pretty much given up on the idea of having any personal privacy and instead swung to the other extreme of making most of my life completely public. Our family has never had any locks on bathroom/toilet doors and finds the notion of knocking before entering another family member’s bedroom to be a baffling concept.

It might sound odd, but this issue grew and grew to become psychologically traumatic for me, and when I’m unwell, I can become obsessed with the idea of people bursting into my bedroom or bathroom at random, leaving me feeling vulnerable and under threat. I appreciate that this is not exactly rational thinking.

My ex-wife had demanded that my parents take me away from the home I owned, the bedroom that my parents put me in had one half of the door lock, but not the other half. I fashioned something that would fit in that lock from a roll of sellotape and had made myself a crude ‘front door lock‘. Something I was quite used to having from 7 years as a homeowner, and several other years with my own flat.

When my Dad came to randomly burst into this bedroom, he found that the door would not immediately open. Instead of saying, “Hello, can I come in?” or even “Hello”, he marched downstairs and phoned the police. It was me who tried to initiate a conversation with him, which he roundly ignored. It wasn’t until the police arrived that I found myself having a normal human conversation.

For anybody struggling with the concept of human communication, it goes like this:

    • First, greet or otherwise attract the attention of the person you wish to communicate with, using their name or saying “Hey!” or “Hello!” or some other form of greeting or conversation initiator. This avoids saying things when nobody is expecting to be addressed or otherwise communicated with – they might be distracted or busy talking to somebody else.
    • Secondly, once you have succcessfully established a dialogue, you may then raise your topic of discussion: ask a question, make a statement.
    • Finally, if a response was expected, you should receive one. Otherwise, after a reasonable wait, you may ask if you were heard and understood correctly.

It doesn’t seem that complicated for the vast majority of the 7 billion souls who crawl over the surface of the planet every day.

Also, there are fairly universal taboos that are not times when communication normally takes place, throughout this large human population: when a person is bathing or showering, when a person is getting dressed or undressed, when a person is having sex or masturbating. Those are normally not acceptable times to expect to hold a normal conversation or interact in a communicative way.

I honestly don’t think that it was the fact I didn’t grow up in the Swinging 60’s that means that I follow the human communication protocol and respect the taboos of most people. I’m fairly certain that most people would have some problem with my parents entering your bathroom while you’re taking a shit, for example.

    Keep Out

You might have heard about acid flashbacks people get, when they have a really bad trip on LSD. One example might be feeling like ants are crawling all over your body, and then that imagined event might occur again, purely psychologically with no drugs in your system, simply because it was so traumatic when it happened.

Similarly, now I’m in my own flat again, and I have a lock on my en-suite bathroom door, I still have attacks of paranoia about people bursting in randomly, unannounced. This has led me to screw 6″ screws into the door woodwork, and other acts of keeping my bedroom door physically closed. This has become obsessive and frantic, at times where my underlying psychological trauma has been exacerbated with drugs and lack of sleep.

My flatmate is actually the first person I’ve ever met who can calm me down and get me to realise that there is no threat, and it’s all imagined, and put down my tools and whatever else I’m fashioning a barricade out of and start to relax and feel safe in my own home again.

I don’t think it takes a professional psychologist to understand that if somebody feels under threat in their own ‘safe‘ space, it only takes fairly limited reassurance that the human protocols of knock before entering are going to be observed, before the distressed individual starts to feel better.

    Attic Attack

That’s the view looking down from my attic in my old house. As you can see, there is no ladder or steps lowered to ascend or descend. I climbed into the hatch without the aid of either. The more you shout at a person and corner them and traumatise them and use the police to do the human part of speaking to somebody, knocking, talking etc… the more you drive them into a state of complete psychological trauma, fear, madness.

The psychological damage can be repaired, and the self-protection response doesn’t have to be triggered to the full extreme, and it gets better over time. My friends Will & Jess, who had let me stay in their guest bedroom, pretty much left me alone until my leg was mostly healed and I was sat in their lounge, before having a normal human conversation about how it was probably time I started looking for my own flat. They were very delicate and considerate with my feelings. They were kind and considerate. They helped and repaired psychological damage.

I have no idea how 5 people can co-exist with a total loony in the same house, and nothing was really said, but they were very discreet and I’m sure they were kind enough to tell a few white lies to save my blushes. I can’t thank them enough for doing that for me, although just like applying the brakes on a supertanker, it takes some time before a person can start to feel safe and unthreatened after a long period of trauma and stress.

You certainly won’t get an aggressive response back from me, however you choose to deal with me, but you may find me trying to burrow my way under your floorboards or pretending to be a pair of curtains or something else equally bonkers, as an absurdly twisted response to the extreme threat that I wrongly perceive.

Aggresssion rarely solved any problems in the world.

    Thwarted

Direct action might be disruptive, but you can never be sure that the consequences will be positive, and not simply drive behaviour underground and close off open and honest dialog. You can also never be sure whether a person is trying to disrupt/interrupt their own behaviour, unless you really know what you’re looking at, when you peek into their private world.

This is a story about dying while doing something you love…

    Autocorrect

Please forgive the gallows humour. I find death quite darkly comic, having lived in its shadow for far too long.

I found myself in possession of a year’s supply of Supercrack once. It cost me less than $150 including shipping. A whole year of drug abuse, in one little baggie. Addiction never leaves your side. You can go anywhere you want, but you can’t escape yourself.

Having a year’s supply of your drug of choice should be an addict’s wet dream, right? Well, it depends on the nature of your addiction. If you’re still managing to eat and sleep, then perhaps you will make it to the end of the year. If you’re not eating or sleeping, then you’re simply committing suicide, slowly.

When I was trapped in an abusive relationship and kept away from London, I had given up on life. I was dying. I used to occasionally get scared of death, and clean up my act for a few weeks, but then I would always relapse, because of the same old abusive relationship and isolation from the city I call home.

I finally made it back to London, but there was pointless crap dragging me back into things that were far less important than saving my life.

    Hassle Harassment Letter

That’s a letter I received, in my mother’s handwriting, hassling me about some divorce paperwork that could have waited until I had completed the treatment that I was undergoing to save my life. I had explicitly stated that I didn’t want my wife or parents to be in any form of contact with me, while I was trying to get better. During this second attempt, I explicitly forbade my wife and parents from having any contact with me or the professionals who were paid to take care of me.

It was time to get better, get away from the s**ts who nearly hounded me to my grave. It was time to move on. It was time to recover.

Eventually, the vultures f**ked off and thankfully I had enough money left to pay the deposit on a flat and the first couple of months rent and bills, so I could get myself settled, get into a new job etc. etc.

I rented a room in a shared house near some friends in Kentish Town. My time up to this point had been wasted on pointless divorce crap that could have been deferred. I had been relentlessly harassed. Also, having my leg in plaster cast and being on crutches didn’t help. My treatment was ruined by people not respecting my wishes. I was in a worse state than ever.

I hobbled into my new room and collapsed. I spent a week crying myself to sleep, I was so exhausted by the trauma of everything that had gone before. I had just about enough money left to make a go of things, but not quite. Everything had to go perfectly.

I had resolved not to commit suicide in my friends’ house, where I was a guest, as it would have been a very unpleasant legacy to leave behind in somebody’s home. They seemed committed to making that house their forever home, so there was no way I could do that to them.

After moving out and having a week where I felt that I didn’t have the reserves of strength and money to continue, I decided to shut up shop. I decided to commit suicide.

The final straw was when my Dad tried to poison my friend’s opinion of me, with his warped version of events. People were talking behind my back, and my confidentiality and consent to share information were completely breached. The place where I had spent the best part of £8k on treatment became some kind of counsellor and general centre for misinformation for my parents, despite explicit instructions that they weren’t allowed contact.

I took a massive overdose and collapsed on the floor. The three metal prongs of a plug were sticking painfully into my thigh, but I couldn’t move. The hot transformer for my laptop was burning my abdomen, scorching the skin, but I couldn’t move. My arms were in the most uncomfortable position, but I couldn’t move. The weight of my head rested uncomfortably on my chin, with my neck extended very awkwardly, but I couldn’t move.

When you have taken an overdose, and you realise that it’s overwhelming you, you start to panic. Can you make yourself throw up, if you’ve swallowed your poison? You know that it’s too late… the chemicals are already entering your bloodstream and vomiting will make no difference. There was a moment’s regret, and then resignation.

My body spasmed and twitched for quite a long time. There were a lot of auditory disturbances (I heard weird things). My mind kinda went blank for ages, or was caught up with weird confused thoughts. Then it dawned on me that I was alive but still on collision course with death. Day turned to night, and night turned to day, and so on. About 4 days went by with me paralysed like that… just breathing, and my body spasming.

I then started to think about death. I started to consider the possibility that I was going to discover if there was an afterlife or not. I started to think how embarrassed I would be to meet some deity who I never believed in. I didn’t start believing in any god, but I considered how sheepish I would be if I met my maker.

Next, I started to think about the waste of it, the waste of life. Not that I was wasting my life, but that there was nothing positive that was going to come from my death. I started to consider how I could leave a message that would somehow prove useful to those who survived me. I started to consider how frustrating it would be to discover something in death, but have no way to pass on that discovery to the living world.

I started to imagine a weird experiment, where two suicidal people would risk their lives to discover if it’s possible to communicate from beyond the grave. They would be in two isolated chambers, each with a keyboard. There would be a randomly timed event that would kill them, but they would get about a minute’s warning before they were about to be killed. They would then type messages, and only in the event that the messages were co-incidentally the same, would the time be extended.

Eventually, one of the experimenters can type no more and rushes out of the experiment exit to safety. The other experimenter is killed. When the messages are later examined, we can see that the co-incidence of the messages being the same is immensely unlikely, but yet there were a sequence of messages that were identical, despite death being inevitable at that point.

Don’t worry, I didn’t decide to start a cult with a suicide pact. I did however decide that dying alone, leaving no note or anything was rather silly. I summoned the strength to claw myself off the floor and onto my bed, where I lay in agony for some time.

I urinated into a pint glass – I was virtually immobile – and saw that my urine was cloudy and the colour of orange juice with a lot of blood in it. My organs had started to shut down. My thigh was a painful mess from the plug that had dug into it, and my abdomen was burnt from the laptop transformer. My kidneys hurt and my tummy was tender and painful. My muscles were weak as hell. I had a lot of fluid on my lungs and my chest was tight. Breathing was difficult.

I decided to try and make death a bit quicker by severing my jugular vein, but my blood pressure was so low and it was actually really hard for me to even find a pulse. I kept blacking out with orthostatic hypotension.

Later, my ex-girlfriend discovered me in this dreadful state, and got me to the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, where the hard-working lovely people of the NHS saved my life.

Here’s the view I woke up to, from my hospital bed. I was quite surprised to wake up (May 2014)

  • Narcissist’s Survival Guide

This is a story about unusual techniques to stay alive…

    Flash Face

I once filled up a law firm’s email server with pictures of myself. I was quite concerned that I was dying and wanted to get the attention of the family friend who was mediating on a matter that was very stressful – an acrimonious divorce was threatening my life & livelihood. Still, very strange behaviour.

When I was getting completely nonsensical replies via email from somebody, I started CC’ing more and more people, so they could see that none of my questions were being answered and an ulterior motive was being pursued by this other person.

Obviously, letting people know when I was in hospital was a bit ‘attention seeking‘ apparently, but messages of support were gratefully received. I know I still have to reply to quite a few people who were kind enough to reach out, but you can believe me when I say your messages did really make a difference.

There was a guy in London who was going to kill himself, but he decided that if, as he walked along, one person looked him in the eye and smiled at him then he wouldn’t go through with it. The urban solitude of London had made him feel invisible, uncared for, alone. Thankfully, somebody did look him in the eye and smile. Human connection is important. Somebody saved that man’s life with the simplest of gestures that cost nothing.

Urban solitude is a problem for many new arrivals in the capital. People have their headphones plugged in, reading a book, or their kindle, watching a movie on their tablet or perhaps just idly playing with their phone. Especially in the morning rush-hour, nobody is talking or in any way acknowledging that you’re all crammed together like sardines in a stuffy tube carriage, on the way to that job that you all hate, from some far-flung flat that you can barely afford.

Anybody who shops in a town centre is probably expert at avoiding the people with clipboards who “just need a moment of your time” to fill in some survey or sign up to direct debit some regular donation to a particular charity. We have become experts in walking right through people giving out leaflets, who aggressively thrust them into areas of our body near our hands, but yet we avoid actually taking a damn leaflet. We can walk right past the beggar and the Big Issue seller without even acknowledging their existence. 1,000-yard stare, off into the distance, and pretend like you didn’t even hear them, didn’t even see them.

I was thinking today about the improvements that Frank made to his story he told me, in order to seem like a more worthy cause. He shaved 4 years off his age, and showed me his forearms and asked me to inspect for the track marks of an injecting drugs user. It makes me feel bad that I’ve told my own story of homelessness, if people are going to dismiss it because of my drug use that I’m being completely honest and open about.

When you meet homeless people, they are often very keen for you to know that drugs and alcohol play no part in their homelessness. To be honest, I was very surprised, when I sat down to have a chat with a homeless person, Matt, underneath the bridge outside Chiswick underground station. Matt was extremely articulate and erudite, and I owe him a big debt of thanks for some of the nuggets of information that were later to serve me well on my own journey through homelessness. I have to admit that although I believed him, I was extremely shocked when he told me he had no drug or alcohol abuse in his past. He was simply p**sed off with the system.

If it looks like I’m dropping all this stuff about getting to know the homeless, and trying to help Frank, into this narrative in order to big myself up as some kind of philanthropist, you’re wrong. Actually, I found it fascinating, informative, later useful and certainly helping Frank helped me to avoid dealing with my own life at the time, and feel better about myself. There was no alturism there. It was escapism.

Every fun-run that you go on. Every sponsored walk or abseil, or parachute jump or whatever it is… you probably did it because you wanted to do the activity, to feel part of the event, to feel like you made a difference. Sadly, you didn’t, except to your own sense of wellbeing and achievement. Yes, we salve our middle-class guilt by making paltry charity donations and taking part in fundraising. Charity doesn’t work. It’s failed.

We are arriving now at a situation where we are in the middle of a refugee crisis, a housing crisis, a benefits crisis, a pension crisis, an economic crisis, a mental health epidemic. Cancer, AIDS, Multiple Sclerosis and a heap of other diseases are still rife. Poverty has not been made history by any rock concerts.

I’m absolutely not discouraging you from getting involved with philanthropic work, and if you’re a volunteer or you’re doing your bit to directly help in the lives of others then I applaud you… not that you want or deserve such condescension. Sorry about that.

Everything’s just so damn broken. Life’s really not working well for the vast majority of people on Planet Earth.

If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem, and I feel very guilty indeed.

    Slumdog Millionaire

Here I am being driven to work through a massive slum in Mumbai from my 7 star hotel. I’m off to help JPMorgan process $1.16qn of Credit Default Swaps, with a team of underpaid Indians who travel for hours on dangerous and overcrowded busses and trains to get to the office. Do you think I was helping this nation of 1.1 billion souls?

I was there in the middle of Ganesh Chaturthi and the monsoon rains. The streets were crammed with trailers with idols and flowers being towed to the sea, with dancing neighbourhood groups beating drums and dancing in the road behind them. The roads are pretty much gridlock anyway, without some gawping tourist of an investment banker sitting in the middle of the chaos with his private driver.

We can feel very special being driven around in the developing world, and living like a king relatively speaking. Many people fall for it. Many people fall for the trick and start believing they actually are special and they deserve their place in the world. That, for me, is where a person can cross the line and stray into narcissism and a sense of entitlement.

Several friends have told me virtually the same story, about thinking they were a hit with the ladies in South Asia or South America, and having ‘pulled‘ a local girlfriend, they were surprised when later asked for cash. Just because you’re not obviously in a whorehouse, doesn’t mean that you’re not participating in prostitution. Just because you’re not obviously on a cotton plantation, doesn’t mean you’re not participating in slavery.

Economic slavery means using your hard currency (Dollar, Sterling, Euro, Yen etc.) in order to buy labour (and all labour’s fruits) far more cheaply than you would be able to in a country with a hard currency. You can’t get pedalled across a European city in a bicycle rickshaw for less than $1. In London it’s £10/minute to be ferried around in this manner, and you can be stung with a £200 bill for a journey that would take 3 minutes by bus.

So, I’m able to sit about on my arse writing the equivalent of two novels all about myself on a blog, peppered with photographs of me. This can only happen at the expense of everybody who grew my food, stitched my clothes and manufactured the expensive laptop on which I type these very words. You could say I’m the ultimate narcissist and profiteer from the hard labour of others.

However, modern life can make you very sick. My friend Klaus often says “it is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a sick society“. I think he’s right. Just because we are dry and warm and well fed and comfortable here in the UK, doesn’t mean that our island is now ‘full‘ and we should ‘look after our own‘.

We are beginning to pay the price for Imperial aggression and an unwillingness to share. That we don’t even redistribute enough wealth to end homelessness and poverty within our own borders, shows just how far we have taken small-minded ‘look after number one‘ attitudes. The tabloid reader’s belief that immigrants are not an integral part of our society, is ironic when a great many of Britain’s working class are clustered together on sink-hole estates that they can never escape. Nobody from higher social strata would ever have cause to venture into the isolated community of poor white Brits.

Do I think I’m better than those people? Am I above living in a council flat, claiming JSA and integrating with the [not] working class? Actually, I feel rather angry that these people have been manipulated by the media into scapegoating the wrong group of people. It’s the moneyed political elite who are the reason for economic inactivity and stressful hand-to-mouth existance of the ordinary British public, not the immigrants and refugees.

Yes, I’m privileged. Yes, I still have some shred of self-esteem. Yes, I’m somewhat conceited in writing so much about myself and plastering photos of me all over it. But am I unaware of my actions? Am I unable to perceive the self-absorption of it all? No.

The fact of the matter is that I just don’t want to be trodden underfoot, so I’m yapping like a little dog. I don’t want to end up dying young, with everybody wondering what happened and whether they could have helped at all, whether they could have intervened.

Suicide might be a sane response to an insane world, but I do appreciate that it’s not a pleasant thing for other people to have to deal with, when you’re gone. I’ve written before about compassion fatigue, and it must be hard when one of your friends or a family member becomes unwell with something so poorly understood as a mental disorder.

Drinking yourself to death, or slowly killing yourself with drugs… these things are clearly part of the spectrum of mental disorders. Substance abuse is just part of a complex picture of declining mental heath that is tightly bound up with prejudice and urban myths.

I had to quit drinking for 101 days, and all drugs and substances for 6 months, in order to be taken seriously. I suffered for my art and my cause: to draw attention to the plight of ordinary human beings who are suffering, not because they are corrupt and immoral, but because our very society is sick, and we are turning our back on our own friends and relatives, because of stupid media bulls**t.

Things have to be pretty bad in somebody’s life for them to take a risk with a deadly substance. Things have to be really bad in somebody’s life for them to be driven into the arms of a chemical dependency, in preference for choosing life.

Why did I choose not to choose life? Why did I choose something else?

This is a story about dangerous combinations…

    Best Toilet

When people started dying of AIDS, everybody thought it was a disease limited to homosexual men. Everybody knows that hetros get HIV too, but what about high levels of promiscuity and apps like Grindr? Well, hetros have Tinder now etc.

Silendafil (Viagra) started to be commercialised globally during the 90’s, and this also changed the public consciousness, to make the use of drugs during romantic interludes, more widely accepted.

Performance enhancing drugs get everywhere. EPO & Anabolic Steroids in sport. Modafinil and Methylphendiate in academia. Cocaine on the banks’ trading floors. Dexedrine for the fighter pilots and soldiers.

Sex now has Cabergoline, which allows men to have multiple orgasms, as well as the erectile dysfunction medications. Also, stimulants like Crystal Meth give people unhuman sexual appetites and stamina.

The problem with combining an addictive drug with a compulsive behaviour, is that you are linking hardwired survival circuitry into the learning & reward mechanisms, which creates a feedback loop. Every time you get horny, you’re going to want drugs. You can’t stop getting horny… it’s evolved into your DNA. You’ve misprogrammed your mesolimbic pathway.

I ordered some alloy wheel cleaner from BASF in Germany, which a few drops of used to accidentally fall into a gulp of orange juice for my ex-wife and me. “Should we do some more?” she used to say, and can you believe that I used to have to be the sensible one and say “no, we’d better stop there. Know our limits. Keep a handle on this thing“.

So, my divorce was more than the loss of a life partner. It was the loss of a shared drug & sex addiction too. It wasn’t healthy. It was co-dependent. It needed to end. It’s just that whoever was weaker at the time was going to get destroyed. That was me.

    Orange Boy

If you feel like a freak, don’t worry, in London you’ll blend right in. You can get a f**k on Craigslist in about 30 minutes, on on Tinder in about an hour. I once met a chap in the park who asked me to be his eyes to get him to hospital because he had gone literally cross-eyed after eating 16 Viagra.

Too Much Information (TMI)? Well, actually, if you read more carefully there’s no actual confession there. I’m just giving you the scope and the scale of the problem. The parameters that I’m working with.

    Legal Highs

Thankfully, you can’t just walk to a stall on Camden Market, or a sex shop in Soho and buy Legal Highs now. You can’t do it on a whim. You can’t just happen to be passing by.

You can’t even sell Legal Highs now. You have to call them Research Chemicals, and mark them as toxic. Not for human consumption. That’s right. Accidents happen though.

None of this stuff is in my life, but it’s 24 hours waiting for the postman away.

I’ve been dreaming about having a meal, having something to eat, but every time I wake up I feel too overwhelmed. I’ve lost my appetite. It can’t possibly be a lack of blood in my drugstream, because there isn’t anything alien in my system. I’m as clean as a whistle.

There’s a mountain of things I need to deal with, including drinking & eating enough. Most of it is very mundane and practical. I know we’ve all shoved post in a drawer and tried not to think about it at some stage in our life. Imagine doing that with everything you need to do, including the consumption of enough calories to sustain life.

I’m sorry it all sounds a bit pathetic and needy. I’m sorry it’s all so sordid and grubby. I’m sorry it’s all so personal and embarrassing and shameful and private. You know, it’s exhausting, hiding an alter ego that you’re terrified of anybody discovering.

Oh well, f**k it. Cat’s out of the bag now. I’m so exhausted. I’m going back to sleep. Maybe I’ll have a lovely dream about Greggs the Baker again.
