Good Job – Nick Grant

Good Job

This is a story about decay…

Decaying plant

Here is a photo-diary which records the decay and decomposition of my little local life. It’s the perfect metaphor.

The plant was a gift, meant to cheer me up when I was unhappy in London. Soon after receiving this gift I got a local job – a “good job” – and I kept the plant on my desk.

You can see that by the third picture in the sequence (bottom left) that my plant was struggling; unhealthy. I tried to revive it by putting it on some wet tissue paper, so that it could suck up some much needed moisture.

I think the combination of air conditioning and no natural light eventually killed my plant, just like it drained all the life out of me, just like it killed my local relationship and just like it somehow killed my “good job”.

I now have neither the relationship, the plant or the “good job”.

Somebody should chuck me on the compost heap.

You are not alone, in the ‘hey, I made the plant sick somehow’ department. I kept a really small cactus in my room, just to green it out I guess. After a few months the damn plant decided that I was making it sick. (1)

The people who sold it to me told me to only give it a drop of water, per month, which I did, every damn month, but no, the really small cactus decided that I was rotting it, so I had to let it go and now I get its viciuos looks everytime I pass by the yard. (2)

haha it’s not you and the care and attention you lavish on the plants sometimes, it’s just the environment: too hot, too cold; too dry, too humid; too light, too dark. I felt so guilty for keeping my plant in an air conditioned office, but it nearly killed me too

    Yeah!

And the one secret that no one ever mentions is that some plants thrive in company of other plants.

The people who sold me the cactus never told me either, it was my mother. Ever since I took the cactus outside, with the other plants, it grew, and even gave flowers. It must be a metaphore, from plants to humans. Alone is not okay, better with company.

    Who knows?

I think company is important. All those experiments on rats on their own in cages with nothing but the bars and the isolation… what do they prove?

It takes a lot to find the situation in which a person, or a plant, can survive, let alone thrive. Some people find it quickly, others it seems, spend their life searching. I hope we both find it soon. πŸ‘πŸŒ±
