A 22.5 Second Read

This is a story about deferred gratification…

I am a fish

What job are you going to do when everything is mechanised, automated? What are you going to do when even the skilled jobs are gone?

I’ve written 264,000 words on this blog. I’ve been practicing. I’m not very good yet, but it’s a wise idea to develop some new skills. Entertainment is going to be the only thing left soon.

I’ve been wondering this too. Humans seem to be in the process of rendering ourselves obsolete through technology. What purpose will there be in existing if not to work? I think many people already do jobs that lack real purpose and necessity. Things will change, but the change process could be uncomfortable as people are generally resistant to change and will try to cling onto their pointless occupations.

Its interesting that we appear to be building things that somehow make us feel less. Maybe we can technologically move on but also consider new ways of defining who we are. Different criteria. A personal move on. After all, this unwillingness to reconsider our self is what threatens our survival. Maybe it’s not what we make that makes us..its how we make ourselves.

That’s a good point, Terry. We might consider things to be a technological advancement, but do they improve the human condition. There’s a lot of talk about ‘farming robots’ at the moment, but what about the basic human need to nurture? I know farming is backbreaking labour, but what happens when we just have infinite leisure time? Why is there a mental health epidemic? Could it be linked to modern lifestyles, where there’s very little job satisfaction, and so few of us actually do anything tangible, like building things with our hands.
